OLEG, Inc - Autumn Update

Hi,

We hope that you had a great summer. OLEG, Inc had an exciting, productive and ground breaking summer. We completed our first project "New Athens, New Jerusalem: A study of Medieval Philosophy and Art in the Country of Georgia" safely and successfully in July 2009. Our exciting program saw 14 new Americans travel to the country of Georgia and study with over 30 actual and potential students and faculty of New Gelati Academy, within Grigol Robakidze University in Tbilisi, Georgia. In this newsletter you get updates about our 2009 summer program as well as what is happening with OLEG right now.

Going to Georgia

Tim Merkel, a student from St. John's College, found the opportunity through OLEG to support a cause, grow as a student and travel outside of the United states for the first time. He loved it so much he wants to go back. He writes:
"I want to go back and learn, and revel once more in the matchless beauty of that land I saw this summer."

The Loss of a Great Man

Jumberi ChkuaseliOn October 5th, 2009 Jumberi Chkuaseli passed away at his home in Tsitelmta, Georgia at the age of 69. I first met Jumberi as I walked up to his home, a home that his ancestors built over 250 years ago and still stands today. The day before our coordinator and friend Lika Megreladze had requested that Jumberi teach our group of Americans to sing Georgian folk songs. A small group of us went to meet him in Guria in June before our large group of 14 came in August. He quickly took us in and sat us around a table and started to teach us "Suliko".

OLEG Joins Peace Effort
New Conversation for Peace Course
In the summer of 2009 OLEG advised and observed the "New Conversation for Peace in Caucasus" peace project. With the experience gained through working in Georgia in 2008, some OLEG members were able to initiate this project in response to the recent regional conflicts. Winning a $10,000 grant from Davis Projects for Peace Foundation that offers grants to college students, they designed a two-week program for youth (ages 16-24) affected by the conflicts in the regions that took place in June 2009. OLEG has agreed to help grow this project. See how the project turned out.
