June 23-29, 2010

A delegation including two senior faculty members Patricia Locke and Louis Petrich from St. John’s College Annapolis, MD campus will travel to Tbilisi to host workshops with ten New Gelati faculty and students from June 23rd to 29th, 2010. The summer delegations are an opportunity for faculty, students, and alumni from St. John’s College to connect with faculty and students of New Gelati Academy and to share ideas and practices concerning the effective implementation of a liberal arts education.

Our goals for the 2010 Summer Program include:
  1. Engaging St. John’s College and New Gelati students and faculty in an ongoing dialogue focused on the improvement of both institutions
  2. Providing professors an opportunity to deeply analyze and reflect on the role of a professor in liberal education
  3. Enriching the students’ view of the process and value of their liberal education

These sessions will immerse the New Gelati faculty and students in the interdisciplinary and discussion-based style of liberal arts education practiced at St. John’s. Outside of class, time will be allotted for formal and informal conversations centered on asking the larger questions: “what is liberal education?” “How does St. John’s College use the Great Books model?” and “How ought New Gelati adapt its own liberal education program?”

By engaging in expert-run classes and dynamic, reflective conversations, all the members of the program will further the development of New Gelati and refine their own views of liberal education with the intent to strengthen their practice of liberal education at their home institutions.
