Welcome to OLEG
Welcome to the Organization for Liberal Education in Georgia (OLEG), an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to promoting and enriching liberal arts education. We believe that liberal education, an education consisting of careful listening, respect, and thoughtful reflection, is the best foundation for individuals and democratic societies; as such, we conduct programs to connect individuals through cross-cultural exchanges of ideas and human resources between the U.S. and Georgia, all to extend the benefits of liberal education.
Partnerships with New Gelati Academy (a program within Grigol Robakidze University, Tbilisi) and St. John’s College, Annapolis have been the focus of our work to date. New Gelati Academy, Georgia’s first liberal arts institution, developed its liberal arts curriculum based on St. John’s Great Books model. Lacking a tradition of discussion-based education styles, New Gelati’s nascent curriculum has sought outside support and resources to strengthen its coherence. OLEG has lead projects such as the Summer Programs, in which workshops, including students and faculty from both institutions, focused on familiarizing the New Gelati community with the Great Books model. Most importantly, the workshops focused on pursuing the questions “what is liberal education?” and “how ought liberal education be done at New Gelati?”
We continue to support the expansion of liberal education through the annual execution of our Summer Programs and the exploration of new program initiatives, such as this year’s Georgian Faculty Visit. Please look through our webpage for descriptions of these current projects. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
